Spike Better Today.

Finnish Art.

As soon as I got woken by a huge leg spasm, I heard Spike wake and gently moan because the painkiller was wearing off.

Was amazed that we all slept so well, had been worried that Spike would keep us awake howling with the pain.

Yesterday afternoon and last night was difficult hearing Spike howling in pain and not being able to do anything to make it better for the little dog

Not too long before bed Richie got him out of the cage and Spike was very determined to independently get on to Richie’s lap, he managed to half walk half crawl his way there.

Once he could snuggle up and get cuddled he was much happier and even a trifle relaxed
for the first time since he got home.

The effects of the methadone were pretty extreme and the injection to wake him up out of the deep methadone slumber was a hell of a shock to Spike’s system.

Difficult to watch your animals going through this, felt bad in the days before the operation as I knew what was coming and he did not.

Felt somehow bad which is silly of course as we do want to get the operation done so Spike can run and play without any problems.

Richie is saying he would prefer the second operation not to happen until October so Spike can have the summer to play and get strong before the second operation.

This should be better for him rather than one after the other with an 8 week gap, with the new plan he will be out of the cage and able to play freely this summer.

Think this is a better plan than the first one where he had the second operation 8 weeks after the first.

This plan feels better and gives Spike chance to enjoy the summer.

Poor Spike.

French Art

After 2 beautiful days today is more difficult, Richie took Spike to the orthopaedic vets for his first of two knee operatio ns.

It was very quick Richie took him there at 9am and came home around 10 by and by 13.00 we had a call that the op was done.

Richie went to get Spike right away and rang me to say prepare yourself for an onslaught of noise.

When he got to the vet he could hear wee Spike howling from the road outside the practice..

Spike was given methadone, the crying and howling is his reaction to the drugs.

He has sounded like moose a few times, but mostly I think he sounds like a little creature who is crying in pain.

Little sweetheart glad it’s done now hope it is starting to heal quickly.

Spike is squeaking, no longer as loud, nor is he doing the full roar of a buffalo, that he did when Richie had just brought him home.

Poor little thing, great that methadone works well bur shame the side effects are so extreme,
Poor wee Spike.

Hate to think of the effects on humans, we do realise mostly what is going on and what we have taken and how it would affect us.

But a small dog in pain after a big knee operation is a sad sight and sound.

If he is like this tonight I will need another pill so I can cope with the sound of little Spike crying.

Now he has to spend 6 weeks in the cage recuparting.
