Spike.
This evening Spike still wanted some of my cashew nuts, and gave me looks until he got some too, I am going to miss sharing little treats like that with our lovely dog.
Later on it became obvious that Spike had reached the end; at first he howled and barked in pure frustration and rage that he could no longer move.
This went on on and off, for a couple of hours until Richie took the dogs to the dog toilet and when they returned Spike was extremely quiet.
As if he had used up his last energy at the dog toilet and after that there was nothing left, really nothing.
For the first time ever, he did not want to eat his chew when they got back, nor did he want anything else either.
He was suddenly very quiet, tiny and very withdrawn and obviously in alot of pain, have never seen him so still.
It is 01.00 in the morning, Richie has just taken Spike off to the Emergency Clinic for Animals to have him put to sleep and put an end to his pain.
We got an appointment for a quarter to two this morning, Richie phoned me to say he had arrived safely at the clinic; it took him about 40 minutes to get there in the snow.
It had became very obvious tonight that Spike was totally finished, it was really heart breaking seeing him go off with Richie, obviously in so much pain as he was so totally still.
Before they went Richie brought Spike into the bedroom to let me stroke him for one last time and to see him look at me for one last time with his sweet eyes.
Heartbreaking to think that Richie will soon be back without Spike, poor Marleen was quite distraught after they left.
Running around barking hoarsely before standing up on her hind legs to look at me and then sat quietly near my bed while we waited for my darling Richie to return.
Richie just phoned to say that Spike had died being cuddled in his arms 5 minutes ago, it is now 2.35 and Richie is on his way home.

HOw sad for you all.
At least the little angel didn't have to suffer too long. Bless him!
Wishing you and Richie fond memories of days gone by when he was fit and well.

Ah, crap! Sorry for you and most especially for Marleen who will never know quite what happened to her great and good companion.
Comfort to you three ...
I have had to say goodbye to 3 dogs an d it was so painful, I still feel the hurt. And in India vets can 't put animals to sleep, they are not allowed by law to keep lethal stuff in clinics so one has to wait for nature to take its course, which is so heart breaking.
Hugs for both Richie and you. I don' t have words to say.
Hi Stan,
Thanks for your sweet words, we miss him very much.
Hi Karen,
We have lots of memories, lovely ones but better would be Spike here now.
Hi Stephany,
Big hugs back to you.
Hi JC,
Thanks, you are right he let us know right away when he had enough.
Hi Judy,
Lots of hugs to you too.
Hi Webster,
As soon as he was in pain, last night, we made sure it was not for long.
Until he was so quiet he had been loud and frustrated and suddenly he had nothing left.
Hi Gareth,
Thanks also for your description of the boy.
Take a look at the clip of Spike and Marleen in may this year.
Hi Tracey's Life,
Thanks for your kind words.
We are glad he has been here with us for 8 wonderful years
Hi Jeanie,
Thanks for your sweet comment.
Thanks all of you dear friends for coming by.
We have masses of great memories of our 8 years with our lovely brave Spike which stopped quicker than we hoped.
Glad we could take swift action so his suffering was not too long last night.
It is so very quiet here without him making something happen.
I Miss him so very much, my sweet lovely Spike.
Keep warm.
Love,
Herrad
I'm not a regular commenter on your blog, but would like to express my sadness that you have had to let go of your faithful companion. As pet owners, we may all be called upon to take this ultimate responsibility: to end pain where there is no other way out. You have both done well; Spike will await you beyond the Rainbow Bridge.
Hi ADB,
Good to see your comment, glad you came by.
Last night we did what we had to end our little friend is no longer suffering.
Hi Amrita,
How dreadful the vets in India can not end an animals suffering.
Hi Cranky,
Thanks for coming by and summing it up so succinctly, it really is crap losing our gorgeous Spike, Marleen is being very brave.
And so are we in-between copious tears.

Herrad,
You & Richie loved him & comforted him as much as anyone could want, canine or human.

Dear Herrad and Ritchie, I am so very sorry for the loss of your beloved Spike. It sounds like you were all blessed to have each other. May he rest in peace.

dear Herrad and Richie
So sad to read of your goodbye to Spike Richie's last journey with him.
It's been wonderful to read about him in so many of your posts along the way. I know he'll still be in your thoughts and no doubt find a way into plenty of blogs still to come - just in different ways.
Yr all in my thoughts

Our hearts go out to you all.
Caregivingly Yours, Patrick

herrad, i'm so very sorry to read this...but, really, it was probably harder for all left behind here than for him. once again, i am sorry.
Tears roll down my face everytime I think about having to let my last dog go.
It still hurts when I get confronted with other dogs or stories like this.
It's very fortunate you have still one dog with you, believe me.
My thoughts are with you Herrad.
Love and Strength.
Ellen.
Oh, Herrad, I'm just reading this now and the tears are rolling down my face. I'm so sorry that little Spike's life is over. Poor you and Richie. You'll both be in my prayers.
