Sad News Abut Spike.

Spike.

Richie took Spike to the vet's yesterday, to get his advice.

Now we know that Spike has bone cancer, we wanted to find out what signs we need to look out for that would tell us he was starting to suffer.

When Richie got back, he told me that the vet thought Spike had only about a month left to live.

His advice was that as he was not in pain and obviously still engaged with and enjoying life and as many biscuits as possible, there was no need to do anything as yet.

But that soon as Spike would not eat and was retreating from the world and started to be in obvious pain, we would need him to be put to sleep quickly so he would not suffer unduly.

Horrible news, not a surprise but a horrible confirmation of the fact we won't have our lovely, energetic, playful and gorgeous little Spike for very much longer.

It is amazing how cheerful and playful he still is despite being sick and losing so much weight so quickly just in the last couple of weeks, it will be so hard to say goodbye to Spike.

I love him so much, we both do, and he is an amazingly lovely loving little fellow with a lot of lust for life, still cheerful and happy when he is so very sick.

I am crying as I write this which makes seeing my text very difficult indeed, just can’t believe that this is happening.

Feels so unreal, at first when Richie told me when he got home I heard and accepted the news but after sometime it became a strange totally unreal thought that our little dog would be dead so very soon.

We will miss him so very much; it has been a tremendous privilege and pleasure to have had him living with us since 2002.

When I had to stay in bed 24/7 from August 2008 until the late autumn of 2009 and again for quite alot of this year Spike entertained me and was constantly by my bedside looking out for and keeping me laughing.

We are going to enjoy all the moments we still have with him while we can, sadly not as many as I had hoped we would have with our beautiful Spike.

Oh Herrad, I am so sorry to hear this news. I am crying for you. You have had so many losses lately, and I am sure that this will hurt deeply. I think that losing our four footed friends sometimes hurts more. They just love us unconditionally.

Herrad~ I am so sorry. I feel your pain with this as I was so crushed with news that my Bruno had lymph node cancer many years ago. Bruno was my gently giant~ a Great Dane mix. He was 125 pounds of pleasure. We had him a part of our lives for just 7 years.
I have this quote from Abraham Lincoln hanging in my kitchen. I hope it helps.
"In the end, it's not the Years in your life that matter, but the life in your years."
SO true. I think you gave Spike as much joy as he gave you. Enjoy the time you have left. Love him, spoil him, comfort him.
Love to you~

He has been a great little dog- every thing I had hoped for and even more- not the brightest dog I have ever met but the sweetest. He has been so rewarding and such fun. We will miss him very much but I glad we took the little unwanted anti social puppy into our home and helped him turn into the best dog I ever had!

My dear friend my heart goes out to you d Richie. There are never words enough to say I am sorry. Just know he will always hold a place in your heart. And he will wait for you over on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge. Animals are our joy, pain, laughter and sorrow. But where would we be without them in our lives. Much love DAR

I feel for you, dogs can play such a major part in our lives. I have lost some fantastic dogs who were loved family members.
The thing I've learned over the years is to always remember to good times you had together.

Well, this is a surprise. I thought the doctor said he could live out a normal lifespan. Apparently all of the test results weren't in then. Still, it's good he has his wheelchair so he can get around. I just wish for you all that it would be for longer. I'm so sorry Herrad and Richie.

Hi Tracey,
Richie and I are in bits, we so hoped he could be treated and be with us longer.

Hi Karen,
Thanks for your support.

Hi Janis,
We are loving Spike and spoiling him lots.
He has been a wonderful fun companion.

Hi JC,
I shall, we both are enjoying Spike here with us now.

Hi Stephany,
So Spike brought us together how lovely, he got a big biscuit and other nice things.

Hi Richie,
You are right Spike's been the best dog ever and such a fun friend.

Hi Muff,
Very sad news.
Agree our animals friends are very important to us.

Hi Robert,
Thanks for your words.

Hi Chekoala,
Thanks for thinking of us.

Hi Darlene,
Spike is always with me I love him so much.

Hi Rhapsody,
Thanks , there have been and here still are many blessings to having Spike in our lives.

Hi Carolyn,
We have had 8 great enjoyable years with Spike.

Hi Webster,
We thought so to but sadly the cancer has grown.

Thanks for all your sweet comments, means alot to hear from you all it really does.

Can't express it properly in words, but you have all helped me by leaving your sweet comments.

It is really hard to see the life draining out of Spike, he has got so thin so quickly, as the cancer has grown.

Luckily he is not in pain right now, he is still enjoying life, the vet thought so too yesterday.

As soon as he is in pain, Richie will take him to the vet, Lin from the British Shop says she will go with him as I can not.

Hope she can go as she needs to be in the shop, especially now her most important time in the year.

We are doing alot of cuddling and giving him heaps of treats.

Can't believe that Spike will not be here soon.

It is hard the only thing we can do is enjoy him while he is here.
Love,
Herrad
Ps Can't stop crying and every mail and comment that I get triggers off more tears ,I spend alot of time with a wet face and unable to see through my glasses

I am an infrequent commenter on your blog, but would like to express my sorrow on hearing that you are about to lose your faithful canine companion. All pet owners have the responsibility towards their animal, to curtail suffering where possible. I wish you strength for that day.

Hello Herrad, you don't know me; I heard about you and lovely Spike via ADB so here I am. I can't say anything that will change the situation but I'm praying that wen the time comes to part you'll know and gain the strength and fortitude to face it.

Love him for all he is and has been to you. Honour him for the joy he gives you and try not to be sad around him. Then let him go.

We will be quick taking Spike to the vet when the time comes.
We don't want our little friend to suffer.

Hi Salemslott9,
We hope so too, depends on how Spike is doing.

Hi Angie,
Thanks for coming by, good to see your comment , good to meet you.

Dear Herrad and Ritchie

As a dog lover myself, and one who also had to 'let mine go' aftr 15 wonderful years, I know how hard your heart is aching.
I know you will be making the most of him and giving him all your attention. That's as it should be. He is such a 'handsome little critter' in the photo. May his pain be minimal.
Bless him and yourselves at this heart wrenching time. I truly feel for you all.
((((Hugs))))
