Last week Richie told me had sad news about our favourite coffee shop, the Basjoe and the two special men, Leo and James. who owned and ran it with love from 1989.
Apparently James, one of the owners had sold the best coffee shop in Amsterdam, one we have been going to since it opened in 1989.
James and Leo, two brothers, started the lovely coffee shop in April 1989, the same time Richie moved here.
The Basjoe was an incredible place, the brothers were such excellent hosts, and there was a lot of love for everyone who visited their shop.
This was reciprocated by all their many loyal customers from all over the world, who visited them every year.
The last time I could visit there was in 2007 they had no wheelchair access, before I was so handicapped, we went there every day after our work was over.
Leo, sadly died from bone cancer in the summer of 2010, it must have been so difficult for James to carry on running the coffee shop on his own.
No wonder James has sold the coffee shop, it must have been so difficult for James going there every day and suddenly no Leo for the first time since 1989.
It’s a tremendous shame that the Basjoe is no more; it’s been sold to someone who will want to make it their coffee shop.
Good luck to them, if they make it a good place to go they will do well for as long as Leo and James from 1989 to now.
