Discovering how weak my right hand and arm were yesterday was a huge shock for me, guess also for Richie and even for Johanneke, my occupational therapist.
She arrived just before I was quite ready and was sitting in the front room waiting for me to roll in there.
So as soon as I was ready I wanted to get out there quickly, this is when I noticed that my right hand and arm were not functioning well.
It took me several minutes to turn the wheelchair around, before I could laboriously get out of the bedroom and through to the front room.
Not only was my arm and hand not doing what I wanted but they were also very painful and it was scary too.
My right arm has suddenly and very quickly become very weak, was shattering to notice how little strength my right hand and arm have now.
Johanneke told me about a variety of adaptations that can be made to the wheelchair so I can stay mobile.
Apparently there are several ways for me to steer the chair, two of these are:
Chin operated.
By blowing through a tube.
And it can be adapted so that Richie can control and steer the wheelchair from the back, not my preference but it would mean that I can go outside.
The good thing is that it will mean that I will get out more than I do now and that is what I shall concentrate on now.
One door shuts and another opens, there is always a silver lining no matter how bad the situation is.

Herrad, I was having trouble using a joystick to control my power chair, and recently switched to a head array control. I talked to my physical therapist about several options, and this sounded like the best choice for me. We moved the joystick to the back of the chair, so Scarecrow can steer if need be. Looking forward to getting OUT again!
I hope you find something that works for you.
Herrad, I took a bit of a long blog break, but wanted to come and check on how you are doing.
At times I can be a withering cynic, but not while reading your blog....~Mary
I love your positive attitude Herrad. You are an inspiration!
Cheers,
Karen
I am so glad that Johanneke was there to witness what was happening.
A BIG HUG for both you and RICHIE.
I will send up my agnostic prayers [what can I say? Catholic roots and all...] that whatever needs to be done to your chair will be done QUICKLY, unlike in the past.
Can Richie use the joystick while walking next to you?
Hi Herrad,
